In commemoration of World Kidney Day, a one-day symposium was successfully held at Jasmine Hall Lt.2, Claro Hotel Makassar, on March 11, 2023. The event was attended by medical professionals, especially doctors, who enthusiastically participated in each session.
One of the sessions that became the center of attention was a presentation from Prof. Dr. dr. Haerani Rasyid, M.Kes, Sp.PD, K-GH, Sp.GK, FINASIM on "The Impact of 5-Methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF) on Homocysteine Lowering Interventions in Chronic Kidney Diseases Patients". In her presentation, Prof. Haerani explained the role of Active Folate (5-MTHF) contained in HY-FOLICĀ® in patients with kidney failure, which is very important to help control homocysteine levels which are often high in patients with impaired renal function. High homocysteine can increase the risk of cardiovascular complications, so proper nutritional management is key.
Folate is vitamin B9 which is vital for many body processes. In patients with renal failure, folate metabolism is often impaired. Folate levels in patients tend to be low, while homocysteine levels (which is closely linked to the risk of heart and vascular disease), soar.
Active folate (5-MTHF) is a direct solution because it is already in a form that is ready to be used by the body. It differs from regular folic acid which must be converted by the body into the active form of 5-MTHF. This ensures that the body can absorb and use it efficiently, even when kidney function has declined.
The event aimed to update doctors on the latest therapeutic approaches in the management of kidney disease, including the often overlooked role of nutrition. This symposium is a tangible proof of the commitment of healthcare professionals in improving the quality of life of patients and public awareness of the importance of maintaining kidney health.
